TARANTELLA
ArtWorld Studio Productions is pleased to announce The Toronto Tarantella Project "Tarantella Cabaret" from the repertorie of Tarantella, the musical performance of southern Italian folk: music, song, dance, tradition such as the tarantella and pizzica. In March 2007 ArtWorld Studio Productions produced the musical drama called Tarantella. It premiered in Toronto and New York (Off-Off Broadway) at La Mama E.T.C. as a musical theatre production and then in LuminaTO 2007 in a concert version in the open piazza of the Distillery District. Tarantella, an original cultural-anthropological drama, is a celebration of life expressed through the southern Italian traditional music, song and dance of the Tarantella and Pizzica in its original integrity.
Highlights from the repertoire Tarantella are the exciting diverse forms of the dance of the tarantella and pizzica. Extraordinary is the pizzica tarantata, an ancient female healing dance still practiced today in the deep south of Mediterranean Italy - the speed and rhythm of this beat facilitates the expulsion of the tarantula's venom, the venom of social, psychological and physical oppressions. Tarantella offers traditional music and ballads that have experienced a revival in Europe, in particular among young people.
The performance features upcoming director and vocalist Marisa Buffone and prominent, internationally renowned and acclaimed musicians such as Bill McBirnie, Larry Lewis, Armando Borg and Claudio Vena.
